What's the best printer for printing photos?
Photo quality means different things to different people. The best print quality available today on a desktop, comes from the new 6 and 7 color ink jet printers. The continuous tone output looks more photographic than any four-color process from a color laser printer. The downside of course, is slow printing speeds and a very high cost per page. Expensive supplies like ink cartridges and special media make ink jet printers prohibitive for any significant volume. However, if you don't mind the wait or the high cost per print, look at the Epson photo 2200 or other photo inkjet printers. |

What is the difference between laser and LED printers?
The only real difference between laser and LED printers is the light source they use to create the image. Laser printers use a single laser along with precision optics and rotating mirror to scan the drum. LED printers on the other hand, use a row of small light emitting diodes that are stationary. Both technologies use optical photo conducting drums and electrostaticly charged toner particles, which are then fused to the paper surface. LED engines require less optics and are less expensive to manufacture. Laser printers generally tend to print better. |
Are color laser printers expensive to operate?
The actual prices of the consumables used by color laser printers tend to turn people off. However, if you do the math you will discover that color laser printers are the least expensive way to print on the desktop. Generally, the more expensive printers will have the higher speed and the lower cost per page. The real cost per page for most color laser printers is in the range of 8-14¢ per page. This estimate is based on letter size paper at 20% coverage and takes into account toners, drums, transfer units, fusers, and any other maintenance kit. |
If I order on-line, will I be charged sales tax?
You will not be charged a sales-tax unless the order is shipped to Georgia , Massachusetts or California. A 0.5 % e-commerce charge is added to orders going to the state of Washington. If you are ordering from California or Massachusetts, you have the option of ordering by phone. This will eliminate the sales tax charge but may add a shipping charge. |
Because you sell printers, aren't your printer reviews biased?
Our reviews are more objective because we sell printers. If you buy a printer recommended by PC World and hate it, we seriously doubt that you will write the editor of PC World to complain. It is more likely that you will complain to your dealer. Ultimately we are accountable for any printer we recommend to our customers. Another advantage we enjoy is the ability to compare and demonstrate these printers daily. Our reviews are conducted by senior service and sales representatives with many years of experience in the printer industry. |

What is solid ink technology? How is it different from laser?
Solid ink technology is basically ink jet technology only instead of ink, the printer sprays molten wax. Currently, there is only one solid ink printer available, the Xerox Phaser 8200. In its best mode the 8200 produces high-quality output at up to three pages per minute. Like most inkjets, the 8200 can print much faster in its draft mode. Unlike laser printers, solid ink printers have very long warm-up times in order to melt the wax sticks and require long cool down times before moving to allow the wax to solidify. Another advantage for laser printers is the higher melting point of toner vs. wax. The wax will melt in environments with high temperatures like cars for instance. In general, color laser printers will print much faster, produce more durable output, and may cost much less to operate. |
