In Short:
The new CP6015dn is the latest 11x17 color laser printer from Hewlett Packard and will eventually replace the CLJ 5550 series. Our printer arrived well packed in what we thought was an oversized box until we unpacked and set it up. This printer is huge even by large format color laser printer standards and will require some space. The CP6015 comes with pre-installed toners and drums so that part of the setup was fast. The printer drivers were easy to install and we like HP’s installation interface but the drivers were slow to load even though we declined the user guide and installation notes. The HP CP6015dn uses a whole new engine and is a departure from previous HP models that traditionally employ mono-component toner cartridges. Instead this new model, like most other printers, now has separate toners and drums. This is presumably done to cut down on waste and reduce costs. However, even with these new efficiencies, the HP CP6015dn easily came in with the highest cost per page of any printer in its class. The printer uses an 835MHz processor and is rated at up to 40ppm in black and white or color. In our testing we found the output speed to be right in the middle of the pack when using the PCL6 driver but the printer performed much slower when using it’s Post Script3 driver, consistently coming in last in many of our more complex tests. The HP CP6015dn produced good color accuracy and sharp text in its best resolution of 1200 X 600 dpi. Gradients were fairly smooth and consistent with minimal banding though solid colors appear to have a grainy pattern especially in the ret4800 mode. All laser printers and computers generate some heat but the HP 6015 emits a lot of heat from the top right of the printer. This could be an issue in a small or poorly ventilated room. The CP6015dn has a 500-sheet feeder that can feed paper up to 11x17 and a 100-sheet MP tray to handle envelopes, labels, or heavier stock up to 80lb cover. Optional lower feeders can be added for increased paper capacity and storage. The base model CP6015dn has USB and 10/100Base T Ethernet interfaces, Auto-duplex, and PCL and PostScript3 emulations. The CP6015x configuration adds a second 500-sheet feeder, storage cabinet, and casters. The CP6015xh ships with four (4) 500-sheet paper feeders and an internal hard disk. All configurations include 512MB standard, (1GB max.), and a 1-Year on-site warranty.

The Bottom Line:
The new HP CP6015dn takes a step forward and two steps back. Though the printer has good print quality and color accuracy overall, it offers average features and performance at best but with high operating costs. The higher purchase price and extra bulk of the CP6015dn seem difficult to justify. This printer is compatible with all current operating systems including MAC OS, and Windows.
