In Short: The OKI C5100 is Okidata's first color LED printerto sell for under $1000. It is also the first color page printer from OKI to not include PostScript or HP PCL compatibility. The single-pass engine design can print up to twelve color pages per minute and up to twenty in black & white. The printer setup was more lengthy than most due to the four individual drums that must be installed along with the four different toners. Be prepared to clean up a couple of tiny toner spills inside the printer caused by shipment turbulence. The software setup went much faster. The OKI C5100 offers decent output quality for most Windows MS Office applications at 1200x600dpi. The OKI C5100n, however, will not work outside the Windows environment and does not offer an upgrade path to PostScript later on. If you want universal compatibility with major publishing applications, PostScript 3, MAC OS, UNIX, or any other OS, you need to look at the C5300n or some of the business class models like the C7500. The C5100 has a 250-sheet feeder and a 100-sheet MP tray for heavier stock. An optional 2nd feeder and auto-duplex unit are also available. The C5100 is one of the speediest color printers in this price range.
The Bottom Line: The OKI C5100 works well in the Windows environment only. The Print quality is ok for presentation graphics applications like Power Point but we do not recommend this printer for desktop publishing or applications that require accurate color and font matching. Cost per page is a plus for this printer but it ships with starter toners that have a much shorter yield.
