In Short: The Xerox Phaser 8200 is the latest in a long line of solid-ink printers from Tektronix. The Phaser 8200 replaces the Phaser 860 series and offers all the same functionality but at a lower price. Another enhancement is the new resin based ink designed to be more durable. Gone, however, is the "free black ink for life" campaign. Phaser 8200 users will have to buy the black along with the three other colors. The Phaser 8200, like a color laser printer, has a controller with RAM and computing power. All configurations run Adobe PostScript 3 powered by a 300 MHz processor. The 8200B comes standard with 64 MB RAM. The 8200N adds Ethernet 100 base TX while the 8200DP adds photo mode and auto-duplex capability along with more RAM. The 8200DX comes with 192MB and adds an internal hard disk and a 500 page feeder. The 8200B and 8200N produce good enough output for most all office applications. The 8200DP and 8200DX print at 1200 dpi photo that looks very good.
The Bottom Line: The Xerox Phaser 8200 prints great and it can print pretty fast. Unlike color laser printers, however, the actual print speed is determined by the amount of coverage on the page and the resolution selected by the user. Print speeds can be as fast as 16 PPM in the draft mode or as slow as 3 PPM in the photo mode. This printer works well in the Mac OS, UNIX, or the Windows environment.
