Hewlett Packard will replace the 8550 color laser printer with their first generation single pass tabloid color laser. The new 5500 series will be much faster and cheaper than its predecessors. A network ready version will sell for less than four thousand dollars. HP has moved up the possible ship date and now hopes to ship by the end of November 2002. Stay tuned.
Based on the published specifications it will be identical to the current 4600 series, except 3.5 inches wider to accommodate the wider paper. It even has the same processor and RAM as the 4600 series. The maximum print speed in color or monochrome will be up to 21 pages per minute. This printer represents HP’s first entry into the tabloid, single pass, color laser market and a huge leap in performance. Other manufacturers, however, are several generations along and already offer bigger performance. Okidata Announces New Color Printers

Okidata is now shipping the newest C7300 and C7500 high-speed color printers. These printers are available in various configurations but all are rated at up to 20ppm color and 24ppm in monochrome. The N versions are network ready, the DXN adds auto duplex, and the 7500 series print up to 1200dpi resolution.
Okidata once again raises the price/ performance bar with their latest offerings, which include the new C9300 and C9500 large format models. These new printers boast a print speed of up to 30 ppm in full color. Okidata hopes to ship the C9000 series by the end of the month.
