In Short:
The new CP4525 is the newest desktop color laser printer series from Hewlett Packard and replaces the C4700 series. This new model is a complete departure from the previous 4600 and 4700 designs and is apparently not manufactured by the same company that made the previous models. Our new CP4525dn arrived safe and was well packed. This printer is much smaller that it’s predecessor and now looks very conventional (the 4700 was way too big). The CP4525 setup was fast as the supplies are mostly pre-installed. The printer’s PCL driver was easy to install though HP required us to download a universal PostScript driver in order to test its PostScript mode. Since the new HP CP4525 series uses a whole new engine, all the supplies are completely different from all previous HP models. However, even with the new engine, the CP4525 still has the highest supply cost of any printer in its class. The printer uses an 800MHz processor and is rated at up to 42ppm in black and white or color. In our testing we found the output speed to be above average.
The HP CP4525dn generally produced good color and sharp text in its best resolution. Gradients were smooth and had minimal banding. The CP4525 has a 500-sheet feeder that can feed paper letter or legal size and a 100-sheet MP tray to handle envelopes, labels, or heavier stock up to 80lb cover. In our testing we found the MP tray to be unreliable especially when feeding more than one envelope at a time. Optional lower feeders can be added for increased paper capacity and storage. The base model CP4525n has USB and 10/100/1000Base T Ethernet interfaces, 512 MB, and PCL and PostScript3 emulations. The CP4535dn configuration adds auto-duplex for two-sided printing. The CP4525xh has 1GB, an internal HD, three 500-sheet feeders, and a stand. All configurations include a 1-year on-site warranty.
The Bottom Line:
The new HP CP4525 series offers good print quality and good speed overall. However, the relatively high operating costs and higher purchase price will turn many people off. This CP4525 is compatible with current operating systems including MAC OS, and Windows.
