In Short: The new OKI C9600 is the latest large format color page printer from this manufacturer and replaces the C9300 and C9500 series. Like all tabloid color page printers, the C9600 is large and requires at least two people to unpack and set up. OKI provides top notch documentation so that unpacking and printer set up went smoothly. Setting the printer up on our network also proved to be quick and painless. OKI provides 24 hour tech support 7 days a week which is good to know just in case. With color print speeds up to 36 ppm color and 40 ppm mono, and a 720 MHz processor, this printer can go through big jobs in a hurry. The C9600 was consistently near the top in our speed tests and the print quality was very good all around. The C9600 produced great looking color and crisp black text even on heavy card stock. The printer can handle paper up to 12” x 18” and as heavy as 80lb. cover, (216g/m2), from any tray and it can handle up to 100lb. cover, (270 g/m2), from the MP tray. However, print quality decreases with heavy stock as the printer prints a very light gray over the whole page. This is especially the case on heavy glossy stock. Most large format color lasers claim to handle longer sheets of paper through their MP trays but OKI gets credit for actually selling the odd size paper needed. All versions ship with at least 256MB and a fast 720 MHz processor. The C9600hdn includes an internal 20GB HD, and adds another 128MB, and auto-duplex unit. The C9800hn configuration has 256 MB RAM, a 1 GHz processor, and the new C9800hdn has 512MB and auto-duplex unit. Additional paper feed options are also available.

The Bottom Line: The new C9600 represents a huge improvement over its predecessors, the C9300/C9500 series, in every measurable way. All the new C9600 and C9800 configurations work well in any network environment including Windows XP and Mac OS. The speed is great and the print quality is very good. For any applications requiring large format color printing, or the need to p
rint on heavy paper stocks, the OKI C9600 may be one of the best solutions out there.
