Printer Comparison

In Short: The Ricoh CL4000DN is Ricoh’s latest business class color laser printer. The new CL4000DN uses a new Ricoh engine that keeps up with the fastest color engines available coupled with a RM7065 533 MHz processor. The printer was easy to set up after it was unpacked. The four standard capacity toners that ship with the printer install easily in the top of the printer. The four imaging units are already installed. The Ricoh CL4000DN printer driver was also easy to install using the Ricoh installation utility. We found the print quality was very sharp on text and line art. The color gradations came out smooth and accurate for the most part. The CL4000DN comes packed with features usually found in color laser printers priced significantly higher. Standard features include auto-duplex for two sided printing, 600 x 600 dpi, Adobe PostScript Level3, PCL5c, 128 MB RAM, and Ethernet 100 Base TX, USB interfaces. With additional 128MB upgrade you can print at a full 1200 x 1200 dpi. The Ricoh CL4000DN prints in full color or black & white at up to 26 pages per minute. Both the 550-sheet drawer and the 100-sheet bypass feeder can accommodate up to legal size paper, 8.5”x14”. The really impressive feature, however, is that both paper sources can handle heavier paper stock up to 80lb. Cover or 216 g/m2. We were also amazed that this machine could auto-duplex paper as heavy as 43lb. Bond or 105 g/m2. Many upgrades are available like additional RAM, a 40 GB internal hard disk, a second and third 550-sheet feeder, parallel and wireless interfaces. Like most Ricoh color lasers the CL4000DN can be upgraded to a full blown MFP with the optional IS200e Image Scanner.
The Bottom Line: The new CL4000DN from Ricoh is a feature packed, high performance network color laser printer. It has very good print quality and above average paper handling. The combination of speed, quality, and one of the lowest cost per page in the industry make this printer a sure winner. This printer works very well in the Mac OS, UNIX, or the Windows platforms.
