In Short: The HP CP5225 series is HP’s entry level 11x17 color laser and has been shipping for almost five years which explains the performance disparity between this model and all other more current units. Overall we would say this is as basic as it gets. Like most color lasers that can print 11x17 it is a large machine with a significant footprint and weighs about 100lbs. While the CP5225 engine can print up to 20 letter size pages per minute in color or black & white, due to its comparably outdated processor and limited memory it is the slowest performer in this category. The CP5225n configuration prints only single-sided documents while the CP5225dn configuration has auto-duplex for two sided printing. All four toners load easily from the front of the printer. The CP5225 has limited paper handling as the standard 250-sheet feeder handles paper sizes up to a maximum size of 11.7 x 17 in. and a maximum weight of 160gsm (about 60lb. cover).

The 100-sheet multi-purpose tray handles paper sizes from 4 x 6 to 12 x 18 in. and up to 220gsm (80 lb. cover).  With a maximum resolution of 600dpi the CP5225 produces print quality with good text and color output that would be acceptable for most office use but not suitable for high end graphics applications, especially given the slower 540MHz processor and relatively limited RAM of 192MB.  The HP CP5225 ships with PS3, PCL5e and PCL6 emulations, and also comes with Ethernet 100/100Base TX and USB 2.0 interfaces. An optional Wireless 802.11g interface is also available. Other options include an additional 500-sheet paper feeder and additional RAM for a maximum of 448MB.

The Bottom Line: The HP CP5225 is an entry level tabloid color laser printer intended for low volume use with limited paper handling. At 600dpi it produces print quality that is acceptable for office use but not graphics intensive application where resolution and color accuracy is required. Though it is the least expensive color laser printer available currently, the slow speed, limited controller, and high operating costs make this prohibitive for extensive or shared use. The HP C5225 series works with current operating systems including Windows10 and Mac OSX.
