In Short: The Kyocera P7240cdn and P6235cdn replace the P7040cdn and P6035cdn models as their newest business and enterprise class color laser printers. The new P7240 and P6235 are built on the same engine designed with economy and the environment in mind but are now faster. Both models ship with a dual core 1.2 GHz processor, fast Ethernet, and 1GB RAM to maximize performance. The P7240 prints up to 42 PPM with a first page out speed of 6.5 seconds for color and 5.5 seconds for monochrome and the P6235 prints up to 37 PPM with a first page out speed of 7.5 seconds for color and 6.5 seconds for B&W. Both printers did well in our speed tests overall and excelled especially when auto-duplexing complex documents with mixed color graphics and text. Set up was easy once the printer was unpacked. The four starter toners included are already installed in the printer and are accessible by opening the top hatch.

Installing the Kyocera printers on a network was also straight forward using Kyocera’s KX driver which supports multiple page description languages (PDL). Both Kyocera models have the ability to print at various resolutions including true 1200x1200 DPI which produced some very impressive results. The monochrome test documents looked very sharp even at the lower resolutions. The color output was outstanding even on plain paper and the color accuracy was especially good right out of the gate. Color images had great depth producing gradients in the orange and purple range that most of the other printers we tested could not match. The Kyocera KX driver has a wide range of color profiles and settings available so you can choose the setting combinations that help you achieve the look you want for a specific document. Like all Kyocera engines, both the P7240 and P6235 have super long life components so the only user replaceable supplies are the four (CMYK) toners. Other components normally replaced in laser printers like the photoconductors (drums), and fuser, are rated for 300K pages on the P7240cdn and 200K pages for the P6235cdn which is more than the average printer life for most users. As a result, both of these models have the lowest operating costs in their respective categories and least environmental impact as well.

Both the P7240 and P6235 have a 500-sheet input tray that can hold letter or legal size paper and a 100-sheet multi-purpose feeder for odd sizes or card stock up to 80lb cover (220 g/m2). Both units include auto-duplex as standard for printing two sided documents on paper as heavy as 60lb cover, (163g/m2). You can add up to three more 500-sheet paper feeders which can also feed card and label stock in addition to regular paper. Both models include PostScript3 and PCL emulations and can connect via USB 2.0 or Ethernet 10/100/1000BaseT. Other options include an internal HD, Wireless LAN (IEEE 802.11b/g/n) interface, and more RAM.

The Bottom Line: The Kyocera P7240cdn and P6235cdn are speedy desktop color printers with excellent print quality and great paper handling. The printing efficiency and super low operating cost may be the most attractive feature of all with a cost per print that is less than half that of other printers in their respective class. Both the P7240 and P6235 are network ready and support all the current operating systems including MAC OSX 10.5 or later and Windows 7/8/8.1/10/Server 2008/Server 2008 R2/Server 2012/Server 2012 R2/Server 2016.
