In Short: The new OKI C844dnw replaces the OKI C831and is the only 11x17 color laser (or LED) printer that is truly a desk-top printer. This printer uses a low profile engine and is capable of print speeds of up to 36 letter size pages per minute in color or black and white. All replacement supplies load from the top of the printer once you open the clamshell design. The OKI C844dnw has decent paper handling especially for its size. The standard 300-sheet feeder can handle paper as heavy as 220gsm (80lb cover) and has an optional 535-sheet lower feeder that can handle paper up to 176gsm. The 100-sheet multi-purpose tray handles various sizes including letter, legal, tabloid, and custom sizes from 2.2” x 3.5” up to 11.7” x 17”, as well as banners up to 11.7” x 52”. The multi-purpose feeder can also handle paper as heavy as 256gsm.

The OKI C844dnw produces decent print quality all around. The printed text was sharp and the color output is suitable for most any office applications. In our testing we found that the driver provided settings allowed us to consistently produce fairly accurate colors. The main weakness would be in the gradations which were not as smooth as some of the higher end models. In our performance tests we found the speed of the C844dnw to be respectable. The printer ships with a 667MHz processor and 1GB RAM which is upgradable to 3GB. The OKI C844dnw includes PS3 & PCL6 emulations as well as direct PDF printing. It also comes with Ethernet 100/1000Base TX, USB 2.0, and built-in Wireless IEEE 802.11a/b/gn interfaces giving you some connectivity options. The printer ships with 2,500 page starter toners. Up to four additional paper feeders and a castor base are available options but adding more than one feeder would make it no longer a desk-top printer which we feel is its main selling point.

The Bottom Line: The new OKI C844dnw combines decent print quality and paper handling versatility in a compact 11x17 color printer that truly fits on a desk. If you need a low volume tabloid color printer sitting near-by but desire the performance and reliability of a laser printer, the OKI C844dnw may be the most attractive option available. The OKI C844dnw supports Windows 7 thru 10 and Mac OSX.
