In Short: The new Ricoh P C600 replaces the super successful C440dn as their newest business class color laser printer. The new P C600 is built on a completely different engine from Kyocera which is designed with economy and the environment in mind. This new Kyocera engine is smaller and lighter than the previous Ricoh engine and as a result do not share any supplies or parts. Ricoh coupled this new Kyocera color laser engine with a 1.3 GHz processor, fast Ethernet, and 2GB RAM to maximize performance. Rated at 42 PPM with a first page out speed of 6.5 seconds for color and 5.5 seconds for monochrome, the Ricoh P C600 did especially well in our speed tests involving complex documents with mixed color graphics and text. It’s essentially identical to the Kyocera P7240cdn and P6235cdn. Set up was easy once the printer was unpacked. The four starter toners included are already installed in the printer and are accessible by opening the top hatch. Installing the P C600 on a network was also straight forward using Ricoh’s quick install software. The new Ricoh P C600 has a true resolution of up to 1200x1200 DPI, and the print quality produced in our testing was excellent all the way around. Monochrome documents looked sharp and color gradients were super smooth even on traditionally difficult colors like orange and greens. The color accuracy out of the box was also good. Both the PostScript3 and PCL drivers offer the end user the ability to choose from many combinations of color profiles, CMYK emulations, along with contrast and saturation adjustments for any one of the primary colors making it possible to achieve the color or look you want. Like the Kyocera models the only user replaceable supplies for this printer are the four (CMYK) toners. Other supplies normally replaced in color laser printers, like photoconductors (drums), developers, and fuser, are rated for up to 300K pages for this engine which is a lifetime for most users. The end result is an extremely efficient print engine with a very low operating cost and little waste. The Ricoh P C600 includes one 500-sheet input tray and a 100-sheet MP feeder that can feed paper as heavy as 80lb cover stock, (220 g/m2). Up to three additional paper feeders can be added for a maximum of four feeders and input capacity of 2100 sheets. All configurations include PostScript3, PCL5e, and PCL6 emulations along with USB 2.0, and Ethernet 10/100/1000BaseT. Auto-duplex for automated two-sided printing on paper as heavy as 60lb cover, (163g/m2), is also standard. Other options include an internal 320 GB HD, Wireless LAN (IEEE 802.11) interface, and Adobe PostScript 3 module.

The Bottom Line: The new Ricoh P C600 is a fast, efficient desktop color printer with good paper handling and excellent print quality. It is virtually identical to the Kyocera P7240cdn or P6235cdn. The ultra-low operating cost however is the biggest selling point as it is less than half that of other printers and is rivaled only by the Kyocera models. The P C600 is network ready and supports most all operating systems including MAC, Windows, UNIX, Linux, IBM, and more.
