Color Laser Printer Review - Xerox Phaser 7100
In Short:
The new Xerox Phaser 7100 series is the latest tabloid color and the first truly desktop 11X17 color model from this manufacturer. It also represents a new lower price point for less demanding users. The single-pass LED engine design can print up to 30ppm in color or black & white. The unpacking and setup of our Phaser 7100DN demo was fairly straight forward. The four small toners install under a narrow flap located on the top left of the machine. The 7100 uses a 667 MHz processor and did well in our speed testing, including the warm-up time. The Xerox Phaser 7100 generally produced decent color quality and good text and line art in its 1200 X 1200 dpi mode though not quite as good as printers higher up the food chain. The single biggest printing deficiency really, is the printer’s inability to print a full bleed 11X17 image as it can not feed oversized or tabloid-extra paper.
The Phaser 7100 has a 250-sheet feeder that can feed standard paper sizes up to 11X17 and a 150-sheet bypass tray to handle other media up to 80lb cover or 216 gsm. Optional 550-sheet feeders can be added that also handle sizes up to 11X17. An optional productivity kit that includes an internal hard disk allows for secure printing and other power functions. The base model has USB and 10/100Base T Ethernet interfaces, PCL and Adobe PostScript3 languages. The 7100DN adds auto-duplex for two-sided printing. Both models include 1GB standard, (2GB max.), and a 1-Year on-site warranty. According to our Total Cost of Ownership calculations, the Xerox Phaser 7100 series is the most expensive 11X17 color laser printer to operate in this or any other category; even when we factored in the use of the highest capacity supplies available.
The Bottom Line:
The good news is that the new Xerox Phaser 7100 is a small desktop tabloid printer with decent print quality and an attractive sale price aimed at low volume users. The bad news is, if you bought this printer to save money, you may have just shot yourself in the foot. This printer works well with all current MAC OS and Windows operating systems.
