In Short: The Xerox Phaser 7800 is the replacement for the successful but long in the tooth 7760 series. The Phaser 7800 is a large-format color laser printer aimed squarely at the high end design and graphics markets. Like most all tabloid capable printers, the Phaser 7800 is not small (180 - 260lb depending on the configuration). Setting up the printer was very simple once unboxed and the software driver install was a breeze due to the intuitive software from Xerox. The Phaser 7800 combines high resolution (1200x2400) with an engine that can handle a wide array of media types and weights. The result is a good performing tabloid color laser printer that can print on heavier stock than most printers tested. The color images we printed on our 7800 were rich, and fills and gradients looked very smooth. Color accuracy is also one of the pros for this model. Printed line art and text looked great. |

The Phaser 7800 has great paper handling as well. This printer is rated at prints speeds up to 45 PPM in color or black & white mode and along with its’ 1.33 MHz processor, performed at or below average, especially on large and complex multi-layered files. The 7800DN comes with Adobe PostScript Level 3, 2GB RAM, 1GB Ethernet, 160 GB HD, auto-duplex. The Phaser 7800 can print up to 11"x 17" 98lb cover stock from the main feeder and has the ability to handle up to 12x x 18x paper through the MP feeder as heavy as 130lb cover or 350 g/sm. The 7800DX configuration adds a 2520-sheet feeder (2x1000 letter, 1x520 up to ledger). The Phaser 7800GX configuration5 adds 1560-sheet feeder (3x520 up to ledger) and includes PhaserMatch 5.0 software with color measuring phasermeter devise. The 7800 printer ships with standard capacity color toners but has high capacity replacement toners available. which means less user intervention. |

The Bottom Line: The Phaser 7800 is a top performing large-format color laser printer with excellent print quality and paper handling. The 7800 printers are well suited for design and graphics intensive applications especially if there is a need to print on heavy or varied Media. The average speed and the prohibitive operating costs make the Phaser 7800 less ideal for high volume environments. The 7800 has the highest per page cost of any printer in its’ class even if we calculate using hi-capacity toners. The 7800 works very well with the Mac OS, UNIX, or any current Windows environment. |
