In Short: The new Xerox Phaser 7500 is the latest tabloid color model from this manufacturer and replaces the Phaser 7400 series. The single-pass LED engine design can print up to 35ppm in color or black & white. Our Phaser 7500DN demo arrived packed very well. The unpacking and setup of the printer was easy enough. The printer displayed an LED failure error upon powering up for the first time though this was resolved after powering down the printer and re-seating the pre-installed photo conductors a few times and powering back up. The software setup went much faster due to the advanced driver install utility provided by Xerox. The printer uses a fast 1 GHz processor and was quite speedy in our testing though the warm-up time was slower both from power up and coming out of sleep mode. |

The Xerox Phaser 7500 produced good color accuracy and very sharp text and line art in its best printing mode of 1200 X 1200 DPI. The biggest printing deficiency is the pronounced banding that consistently appears on lighter colors and gradients. Although darker colors appear solid, lighter colors are also grainy. The Phaser 7500 has a 500-sheet feeder that can feed paper up to 11X17 and a 100-sheet MP tray to handle envelopes, labels, or heavier stock up to 100lb cover. Optional 500-sheet feeders can be added that handle sizes up to 13X18. An optional productivity kit that includes an internal hard disk allows for secure and direct PDF printing. The base model has USB and 10/100Base T Ethernet interfaces, PCL and Adobe PostScript3 languages. The 7500DN adds auto-duplex for two-sided printing. The 7500DT includes a second 500-sheet paper feeder and the 7500DX has four 500-sheet feeders and includes the above mentioned productivity kit. All configurations include 512MB standard, (2GB max.), and a 1-Year on-site warranty. Like most printers in this class the Phaser 7500 has high capacity color toners available, (17,800 pg yield), but ships with standard capacity toners. Based on our calculations the Phaser 7500 series has one of the highest operating costs of the printers in this category even when we factor in the use of the high capacity supplies. |

The Bottom Line: The new Xerox Phaser 7500 is fast and has decent print quality, especially for text and line art. Though the color accuracy is good, the banding issue and graininess take away from the overall print quality score. The higher supply costs may also deter high volume users. This printer works well with all current operating system environments including MAC OS, and all versions of Windows. |
