In Short: The new Xerox Versalink C7000 replaces the Phaser 7100 as their entry level 11x17 color laser printer. Unlike its predecessor, this new C7000 is not a smallish desk-top printer. Like most all 11x17 capable color lasers, it is a large machine that weighs well over 100lbs. The C7000 has roughly the same footprint as the Xerox C8000 and C9000 models but is scaled down in terms of features and speed. The Versalink C7000 is capable of print speeds of up to 35 letter size pages per minute in color or black and white and the C7000dn configuration is equipped with auto-duplex so it can print two sided documents. All replacement supplies load easily from the front of the printer behind a door. The C7000 has good paper handling but still a step down from the more robust C8000 and C9000 models. The standard 520-sheet feeder handles paper sizes from 5.5 x 7.17 in. to 11.69 x 17 in and up to 256gsm (95 lb. cover).  The 100-sheet multi-purpose tray also handles paper sizes from 3.5 x 3.87 in. to 11.69 x 17 up to 216gsm (80 lb. cover).

The C7000dtn configuration ships with a second 520-sheet feeder which allows you to have two different paper sizes or types loaded simultaneously. In our testing the Xerox C7000 produced good print quality with sharp text and vibrant color output that would be more than adequate for presentations and general office use. The only area where it didn’t do as well as higher end models, like the Xerox C8000/C9000 or Ricoh C840/C842, was depth and those in-between shades. Also the printer driver was not the easiest to use. It took a bit of getting used to as multiple steps were needed to make simple changes like paper size and media type. In our performance tests we found the speed of the C7000 to be acceptable as it lagged behind most other models in this category. The VersaLink C7000 ships with a 1.05 GHz Dual-core processor, 2GB RAM, and includes Adobe PS3, PCL5e and PCL6 emulations, as well as direct PDF printing. It also comes with Ethernet 100/1000Base TX and USB 3.0. An optional Wi-Fi interface is also available. The C7000 ships with standard capacity color toners rated up to 3,300 pages. Other options include additional paper feeders and 320GB internal HDD.

The Bottom Line: The new Xerox Versalink C7000 has good print quality and paper handling, and is the least expensive 1200dpi 11x17 color laser printer available as of this writing with a purchase price under $1700.  Upon closer analysis however, it ends up being one of the costliest printers to actually own and operate due to its relatively expensive supplies. This is true even if we calculate using the high capacity toners. Even though this model has some high end features we cannot recommend this printer for any kind of significant use. If you require a high volume tabloid color printer we would strongly urge you to look at the Xerox C9000 or the Ricoh C840dn and C842dn models. The Xerox C7000 series works well with all current operating systems including Windows10 and Mac OSX.
